Johnson & Johnson Admits: Our Baby Products Contain Cancer-Causing Formaldehyde!

By  |

All around the world, parents are shocked, because they heard that the famous No More Tears baby shampoo from Johnson & Johnson has formaldehyde in its content. Formaldehyde is usually used in embalming dead bodies and at the same time has been discovered that causes cancer.

If you want to understand how dangerous is this substance formaldehyde that is added in baby products you have to look at the evidence from research done over the past few decades. That way you will easily understand just what formaldehyde is.

Formaldehyde is highly flammable and recognized by its very strong smell. This substance which is used in various products is a clear liquid. It is used for different products including insulation materials, paper products, fabrics, glue, building materials and cleaning solutions. It is also used disinfectant properties, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

But what is the relation between cancer and formaldehyde? Is it as dangerous as people around the world think? Although the long-term research on formaldehyde hasn’t been completely finished, there are many proofs that present it as a cancer-causing agent or carcinogen.

In 1987, the EPA classified it as a carcinogen.  Lately, the United States government officially labeled it as a carcinogen, too.

There are many of studies that discovered that it does indeed cause cancer in both humans and rats. Some studies of people who work around embalming fluid like embalmers discovered that they have a higher rate of cancer than others. So the facts are crystal clear on whether it is or it is not related with cancer.

Johnson & Johnson Scandal

Although the company continues to claim that the amount of formaldehyde is not enough to be detrimental to humans including infant humans, and the fact is that it still added this chemical substance for as long as they have been making the famous No More Tears shampoo.

The good thing is that the company has announced the removal of formaldehyde from that shampoo and from one hundred other products that they manufacture.

The fact that they will remove it from their products may be a sign of good intentions. But the real question is: why haven’t they done it before?

Obviously, the product doesn’t require that particular ingredient because they will use a completely different formaldehyde free formula.

The most interesting is the suspect timing, because California just passed a law that asked cosmetic companies to identify more than 160 chemicals that previously had been kept as a secret and at the same time they could be harmful to people.

Johnson & Johnson isn’t the only company that includes harmful chemicals in body and bath products. There are advocates who lobby for other cosmetic companies that use harmful ingredients in their products.

Johnson & Johnson claim that to change the formula cost them tens of millions of dollars, so they are not sure if other companies will follow suit, because maybe they can not afford to.
