Portulaca oleracea, well-known as Purslane, is considered a common weed, and it usually grows in your garden, without your explicit invitation.

In the beginning, it was cultivated in Persia and India, but later it was spread all over the world. People have different opinions about this special plant. Some people cultivate it and consume it as a food, but the others simply throw it away together with the other weeds.

Purslane is recognizable for its usually yellow flowers and fleshy leaves. But what’s more interesting is that its health benefits are more desirable.

Furthermore, purslane is rich with two different types of beta lain alkaloid pigments – a yellow beta-xanthins and a reddish beta-cyanis, which are equally anti-mutagens and potent antioxidants. Also purslane has vitamins C, and B-complex including niacin, pyridoxine and riboflavin, minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron and carotenoids.
