Portulaca oleracea, well-known as Purslane, is considered a common weed, and it usually grows in your garden, without your explicit invitation.

In the beginning, it was cultivated in Persia and India, but later it was spread all over the world. People have different opinions about this special plant. Some people cultivate it and consume it as a food, but the others simply throw it away together with the other weeds.

Purslane is recognizable for its usually yellow flowers and fleshy leaves. But what’s more interesting is that its health benefits are more desirable.

Powerful Seeds Grow in Many Climates

The seeds of purslane can stay viable in lend for amazing 40 years, which is a perfect proof for its power.  You should not forget that it is a natural crop – no GMO! It usually grows in arid climates and in a well-tended garden and, often equally as well. This powerful plant has great benefits for our immune systems and overall health.

This plant is also well known as pig weed. But don’t forget that Purslane has one of the highest levels of vitamin A among all leafy green vegetables and more beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids than many fish oils!  High Vitamin A foods (1320 IU/100 g, provides 44% of RDA) can help to boost eye health and it can surely protect us from many types of cancers.

Strong Anti-Oxidant

Furthermore, purslane is rich with two different types of beta lain alkaloid pigments – a yellow beta-xanthins and a reddish beta-cyanis, which are equally anti-mutagens and potent antioxidants. Also purslane has vitamins C, and B-complex including niacin, pyridoxine and riboflavin, minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron and carotenoids.

With all these nutritional and health benefits, and the large amounts of money we spend on supplements to better our health, I think that we can all agree that the purslane should be elevated from weed status to health-boosting, everyday food. Purslane packs an extraordinary powerful nutritional punch.
