Recent statistics have shown that American people drink more soda than before. They cover more than 25 percent of all drinks that are daily consumed in the United States. More than 15 billion gallons of soda were sold in 2000. That is approximately about one 12-ounce can per day for every child, woman and man.

But here’s some important information that will probably keep you away from opening the next can:

  1. Extra pounds

Soda is a main contributor to obesity. Drinking only one can per day of soda drinks converts into a pound of weight gain every month. It may sound counterintuitive, but diet soda also causes weight gain as regular one, or even more. That’s why, people who drink diet soft drinks never lose weight. Artificial sweeteners make you gain weight.

  1. Liver damage

Your liver can be damaged by soda drink. Consumption of too many soft drinks increases the risk for liver cirrhosis. (Similar to the increased risk faced by chronic alcoholics)

  1. Tooth decay

Soda can dissolve tooth enamel. Soft drinks are usually responsible for doubling or even tripling the risk of tooth decay. The acidity in the soda drinks is even worse than the solid sugar found in candy.

  1. Kidney stones and chronic kidney disease

All kinds of colas contain high phosphoric acid content, a substance that promotes kidney stone formation. Consuming about one quart of soda per week increases your risk of kidney stones.

  1. Diabetes

Anything that promotes weight gain is connected to the risk of diabetes. Drinking soda disables your body to process sugar. Some scientists today find a strong relation between sodas and number of Americans with type 2 diabetes. They think that it is the reason why type 2 diabetes has tripled from 6.6 million in 1980 to 20.8 million today.

  1. Heartburn & acid reflux

A great number of carbonated beverages are acidic. They deliver air in the form of carbon dioxide, and that can cause distension of your stomach. Distension is associated with more reflux.

  1. Soft drinks = Soft Bones = Osteoporosis

Soft drinks are definitely linked to osteoporosis. When phosphate levels are in high stage and calcium levels are on low stage, calcium is actually pulled out of your bones.

  1. Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Some scientists have clear reasons to believe that overconsumption of soda increases your blood pressure. It doesn’t make any difference if the soda is regular or diet.

  1. Heart disease

Heavy soda drinkers have higher risk factors for heart disease. Some recent research have shown that drinking more than one soft drink a day can increase the risk for elevated fasting blood sugar, central obesity, elevated blood pressure, and low levels of HDL or also known as good cholesterol. These symptoms can lead you to developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

  1. Impaired digestion (gastrointestinal distress)

Drinking sodas on an empty stomach normally upsets your stomach and other gastric lining and creates a terrible continuous acid environment. This acid environment can easily lead to inflammation of your duodenal lining and stomach.

I’ve warned my readers of the danger called soda since I started this site, and I am sure that this is a good list of reasons why you should avoid the soda drinks just like the plague.

Soda is on my list of the six absolute worst foods and drinks people can consume.

The good news about all these is that is very easy to break the habit of drinking sodas. As you can notice from all the examples above, you can easily improve your health just by cutting soda out of your diet.

Why do I believe this?

Because soda clearly elevates insulin levels, which are the foundation for different chronic diseases:

Diabetes

Cancer

Arthritis

Heart disease

Osteoporosis

Premature aging

Beside all above mention health problems, there is one more health problem connected with soda:

Soda Drinkers Have an Increased Risk of Many Types of Cancer

A four-year study at the National Institute of Public Health and National Institute for Environmental Protection settled in Netherlands compared 121 biliary tract cancer patients with 481 controls. This study shows that the cancer risk is strongly related with the doubled intake of sugars for the cancer patients.

Many studies have linked sugar intake with different types of cancer, including:

Throat cancer

Colon cancer

Breast cancer
